The Institute's TechOWL program will present a free lunch and learn webinar series throughout May 2026 to celebrate National Speech-Language-Hearing Month.

One-Hour Sessions on AAC Topics

"AAC" is Augmentative and Alternative Communication. One-hour webinars on AAC topics are scheduled for each Wednesday at noon this May.

Attend one, some, or all of the webinars. Register separately for each webinar that interests you. Registration is required.

May 6: Lives, Not Just Language: Supporting Engagement and Participation for Adult AAC Users

This presentation explores strategies for supporting emergent adult AAC users to improve participation and quality of life. This session will focus on how AAC access can support meaningful engagement across adult life domains. Examine how AAC system design, communication partner training, and environmental supports influence opportunities for supporting self-determination, engagement, and meaningful participation in everyday contexts.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the needs of emergent adult communicators who use AAC
  • Describe barriers that impact participation and quality of life for emergent adult AAC users
  • Identify strategies to promote meaningful participation, support engagement, and expand communicative functions for adult AAC users

May 13: The Right to (NOT) Remain Silent: AAC in the Court and Legal System

How do we improve AAC user outcomes for participation in the court and legal system? Learn about the impact of using assistive technology, including successes and barriers, within the context of legal proceedings. This session will focus on access to justice-related vocabulary available on speech-generating devices and how SLPs can advocate for/support AAC users navigating the legal system.

  • Describe at least 2 ways speech-language pathologists can advocate/support AAC users involved in the legal system
  • Develop at least 2 rationales to support access to court and justice-related vocabulary for AAC users
  • Recommend 3 or more examples of vocabulary/phrases for self-advocacy related to the legal system

May 20: From Eye-Gaze to IEPs — Your Questions Answered!

You asked, we listened and now we're bringing some answers! This session will answer some of the questions submitted by you. Whether it's "Can I learn more about eye-gaze devices?" or "How do you work on accepting 'no'?", we're going to dive into the topics you've requested!

Learning Objectives:  

  • Identify at least 2 different eye-gaze device options
  • Describe at least 1 technique for working on accepting "no" after a request
  • Recall at least 2 goals related to AAC use

May 27: Healthy Consent and Boundaries for AAC Users: Dice Activity and More!

Join the Healthy Sexuality Project for a workshop on consent and boundaries for AAC users. Attendees will learn concrete ways to help AAC users practice consent and boundaries for all types of relationships, including a Boundaries Dice Activity with adaptations.  

The Healthy Sexuality Project is a program within the Institute on Disabilities at Temple University. We provide positive sexuality education for people with disabilities, families, and those who support them.

Learning Objectives:  

  • Teach definitions of everyday consent and boundaries using plain language
  • Utilize the Boundaries Dice Activity with AAC users and people with IDD
