Nancy Thaler Retires; Former Institute Staff Named Successor

Nancy Thaler, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Human Services, Office of Developmental Programs announced her retirement on Friday, August 17, 2018 and Kristin Ahrens, former Institute on Disabilities at Temple University staff member has been named Acting Deputy Secretary.

Ahrens served as Policy Director at the Institute from 2005 to 2015 where she headed The Pennsylvania Training Partnership for People with Disabilities and Families, providing statewide, person-centered and culturally competent training for people with disabilities and families.

Kristin spent much of her time at the Institute working with policy makers throughout the Commonwealth to help increase their understanding of issues and concerns of people with disabilities and their families, and the people who serve them.

"Nancy has been a tremendous leader," says Celia S. Feinstein, the Institute's Executive Director.

"While she will be sorely missed, we know that the Department will be in capable hands. During Kristin's time at the Institute, she was well known throughout the Commonwealth as a knowledgeable and passionate advocate for people with disabilities.

"We wish her the best and look forward to her exciting new leadership."
