What Employers Say about Job Skills, Recruitment and Hiring Employees Who Rely on AAC An article on Augmentative and Alternative Communication, June 2007 written by Diane Nelson Bryen, Blyden B. Potts, and Allison C. Carey. In order to better understand employer perspectives with respect to hiring and working with people who use AAC and the kinds of employment barriers they believe exist for these individuals, a study into the job requirements processes, and hiring processes of 27 employers in the United States was conducted. Interviews with the 27 employers focused on 48 jobs in 25 unique categories, many of which had previously been identified as desirable by 38 adults who used AAC. ID:500 Unequal Justice: The Case for Johnny Lee Wilson In 1986, Johnny Lee Wilson, a 19 year old man with mental retardation was arrested for the murder of an elderly woman who lived in his hometown of Aurora, Missouri. Wilson unknowingly waived his right to an attorney and after six hours of interrogation confessed to the crime. He spent the next nine years of his life in prison for a crime he did not commit. This documentary, produced by the Institute on Disabilities, examines this controversial case from a disabilities perspective. ID:707 Independent Monitoring for Quality: A Statewide Summary (2000-2001;2001-2002; 2002-2003; 2003-2004) This report presents the findings of face-to-face interviews with individuals receiving services and supports through the Office of Mental Retardation. Independent Monitoring for Quality (IM4Q) is conducted by 46 local programs that are independent from the existing service delivery system. Interviews are conducted by local teams comprised of people with disabilities, family members, and/or concerned citizens. The interview instrument for IM4Q is the Essential Data (EDE) survey. The EDE includes a pre-survey, a consumer survey and a mail survey for family, friends or guardians. The consumer survey is comprised of six sections: Satisfaction; Dignity, Respect and Rights; Choice and Control; Relationships; Inclusion and Monitor Impressions. The sections on Satisfaction and Dignity, Respect and Rights can only be answered by the person receiving supports.
