The Institute on Disabilities promotes, conducts, and disseminates constituency-oriented, collaborative research and evaluation inclusive of people from diverse cultures as collaborators and participants in research and evaluation process.
- address issues related to diversity within the disability community, representing the range of both disabilities and cultural diversity
- include diverse populations in needs assessments
- expand collaborations with organizations within the disability community beyond the mental retardation system
- expand collaborations with key Pennsylvania organizations representing racially/ethnically diverse populations
- develop research and evaluation projects in collaboration with a cross-disability or community organization
- involve graduate students and faculty in research and evaluation grants
- promote the use of Institute research and evaluation data to doctoral students
- expand research and evaluation on Criminal Justice
- expand research and evaluation on people moving from institutions to community
- expand research and evaluation that supports the value of community life
- expand research and evaluation on assistive technology and cognitive disability
- ensure that Institute programs have outcome and impact measures
- conduct research on needed vocabulary and symbols that reflect adult-valued activities for people who rely on AAC
- develop indicators and evaluate the system change impact of Pennsylvania's DD Council's activities
- ensure that reports, publications, and materials are available in alternative formats, including CD-ROM
- publish peer-reviewed research articles in scholarly journals
- expand presentations of research-related findings
- expand co-authorship of publications with co-researchers with disabilities
- expand co-presenting with co-researchers with disabilities
- disseminate secondary findings including prevalence to disability community
- compile and disseminate scholarly research and evaluation produced at the Institute
