LINKS: Living Inclusionary Knowledge in Schools
LINKS will integrate
the knowledge, skills and dispositions relevant to special education
into the general teacher education programs through a redesign
of curriculum, an increased emphasis on inclusionary field experiences,
and enhanced collaboration between special education and general
education faculty. A unique component of the LINKS project is
the establishment of a special education "broker" within
each teacher education program to provide training and advocacy.

Preparing Future Middle and High School Teachers to Meet Diverse
Learning Needs in Inclusive Classroom Settings:
A Co-Teaching Model for General and Special Education Teachers
Faculty in the
Education and Special Education departments will investigate ways
to redesign two required courses that would have faculty model co-planning
and co-teaching techniques for undergraduate students. Faculty will
partner with secondary teachers in the Scranton School District
to learn of current models of inclusion that are being implemented
and to seek their assistance in the redesign of the coursework.
The long-range goal of this project is to review the curriculum
of all secondary education certification programs at the university
in light of inclusive practices.

Developing a Unified Approach to Regular and Special Education
This initiative
focuses on professional development for faculty in inclusive
practices, such as differentiating instruction, and emphasizes
increased partnerships with parents and family members of individuals
with disabilities through on-going participation in The Special
Education Advisory Committee. Through these activities, skills,
knowledge, and practices that support inclusive education will
be clearly and intentionally infused within the Elementary Education
and Special Education curricula so that all entry-level teachers
will emerge from the program with the necessary knowledge, abilities,
and attitudes to responsibly and effectively teach all learners.

Enhancing Teacher Preparation Programs for Inclusive Practices
Redesign of teacher
preparation coursework and curricula will take place through the
use of curriculum consultants to support partnerships among general
and special education faculty. Consultative relationships will be
developed with faculty from Indiana University of Pennsylvania,
Pennsylvania's Training and Technical Assistance Network (PaTTAN),
faculty at Hampton High School, and families and individuals with
disabilities. In addition, university-wide workshops, presentations,
and awareness activities will be conducted in order to foster an
atmosphere of acceptance and understanding of individual needs.

Redesigning the Teacher Preparation for Meeting the Unique Needs
of Secondary Students with Disabilities in Inclusive Settings
Redesign of the
teacher preparation program will focus on the development of
a special education certification for undergraduate and graduate
secondary education majors. This certification emphasizes the
reading\literacy curriculum to enable secondary majors to provide
direct instruction in reading to all students at the secondary
level. Field experiences for both general and special secondary
education teachers will be enhanced through staff development
activities that focus on issues of inclusion, such as accomodations,
behavior, and collaboration.
