LOGO and byline "A Specialized Human Resource Organization" Footer- Personalized Approach for Individuals, Community Organizations, Schools, and Business PAGE 2- Inside COVER Consider This Despite legislation and extensive support programs, individuals with disabilities continue to experience significant unemployment or underemployment. While some people may have work limitations related to their specific impairment, there are frequently external barriers that have greater impact: preconceived ideas about an individual’s value in the workplace, low expectations, transportation, and accessibility. In addition, many public programs still equate having a disability with an inability to work. Traditional vocational rehabilitation strategies have focused on segregated training centers and in many communities, there has been little choice among service providers. AHEDD….Bringing Visions Together AHEDD is a private, non-profit organization with a mission to serve the community as a catalyst in the employment and development of persons with disabilities. Established in 1977, the agency has served as a pioneer in supported employment. Today, AHEDD is a recognized leader in the implementation of effective strategies for bringing together employers with motivated and qualified individuals with disabilities. Who We Serve and How We Are Funded AHEDD assists individuals with a documented disability that represents a barrier to employment. Individuals must be of legal working age; those who are younger than 18 must have expressed parental/guardian permission. AHEDD’s services are generally sponsored by a third party interested in achieving cost effective outcomes. Sponsors can include the state vocational rehabilitation agency; Medicaid such as the county or state mental health, mental retardation programs; Social Security Administration; or local schools. Our Services….Mapping it Out for Individual Success Service strategies are based on the development of an individualized plan of service. AHEDD collaborates with the individual and other relevant parties to explore the participants strengths, limitations, goals, and priorities. These issues will be viewed in the context of other program and community living activities. Pre-employment activities can include an emphasis on job seeking skills, career exploration, community-based work assessments. Concurrent with these activities, AHEDD will network with localbusiness through a variety of strategies to find interested employers. AHEDD facilitates job placement in local work environments based on the skills and qualifications of the participant. AHEDD’s role is to facilitate successful employment through job coaching, proactive follow-along support, and provision of technical assistance to the employer. AHEDD provides community based work assessments and internships for young adults. In addition, AHEDD can coordinate job related services or supports as needed, including transportation, benefi ts counseling, and assistive technology.
